First Encounter with the Desert
Standing at the edge of Wadi Rum Desert, I first saw this mysterious land known as the "Valley of the Moon." Red-brown sand dunes stretched to the horizon, massive rocks formed strange silhouettes, making it feel like another planet. Silver domes scattered across the desert sparkled with futuristic brilliance in the sunlight, evoking images of a future Mars base.
The scenery here was absolutely breathtaking! Looking out, the layered dunes rose and fell like giant waves, with colors transitioning delicately from light brown to deep red. Most magical were the giant rocks visible everywhere, some looking like building blocks casually placed by giants, others like mysterious sculptures left by aliens. Especially when sunlight hit at different angles, these rocks would display completely different colors and textures.
On the desert horizon, occasional camel caravans could be seen moving slowly, like slow-motion scenes from a movie. The colorful robes of the Bedouins fluttered in the wind, adding vivid splashes of color to this seemingly barren land. The guide said the Bedouins have lived in this desert for generations, knowing every terrain and corner intimately.
Mars Base
The dome camp is absolutely the most eye-catching presence in this desert. These silver spherical buildings look like Mars colonies from science fiction movies from afar. Each dome is carefully designed to blend perfectly with the surrounding desert environment while maintaining a distinctive futuristic style.
Stepping inside the dome, I was instantly amazed! The designers were truly thoughtful, completely revolutionizing traditional desert camping. Each dome tent exceeds 40 square meters, with a central height of nearly 4 meters, making the entire space feel especially open and transparent. The room layout is also well-considered, with beds positioned to directly view the stars, allowing guests to admire the brilliant Milky Way while lying in bed.
The air conditioning system is particularly smart, maintaining the most comfortable temperature regardless of outside conditions. Better yet, these domes use special insulation materials, so it never feels stuffy inside even at noon. The bathroom design is also thoughtful, with 24-hour hot water and high-end bathroom amenities. The shower glass can even adjust its transparency as needed, letting you enjoy the desert sunset while showering.
Each dome has its own viewing platform equipped with comfortable loungers and small tables. Sitting here at night, drinking mint tea while stargazing, is simply heavenly! The platform floor uses non-slip materials, so there's no safety concerns even with heavy dew at night.
Desert Adventure
The adventure experiences here are truly addictive! As a filming location for classic sci-fi movies like "The Martian" and "Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker," every landscape here is filled with cinematic quality. Especially when standing on the same sand where Matt Damon walked in the movie, that feeling is simply indescribable!
Hiking through canyons with a Bedouin guide was definitely one of the most exciting experiences of the trip. Our guide Ali was a particularly interesting person, sharing many local histories and legends along the way. He said his family has lived in this desert for hundreds of years, knowing every rock intimately.
Those iconic rock arches are truly nature's masterpiece! The largest arch reaches nearly 30 meters high, making you feel as tiny as a grain of sand when looking up at it. Ali told us these arches were formed over tens of thousands of years of weathering, each with its own unique shape and story. Some look like dragons, some like camels, and there's even one that particularly resembles an alien spacecraft landing platform.
During our exploration, we encountered a group of wild desert foxes, which were very clever, spotting us from afar and quickly hiding behind rocks. Ali said these little creatures are an important part of the desert ecosystem, mainly active at night, making daytime encounters quite rare.
Starry Night Adventure
But the most stunning experience was definitely the night sky! The desert night sky, far from city noise, was so densely packed with stars it moved me to tears. The Milky Way stretched across the sky like a luminous river, decorated with countless stars so bright they seemed within reach.
We were especially lucky to meet an extremely professional astronomy enthusiast. His telescope was extraordinarily high-end, with an advanced optical system. Through the telescope, we clearly saw Saturn's rings in detail, a sensation impossible to describe in words. Jupiter and its moons were also particularly bright, like a miniature solar system.
The experience of stargazing while lying on the viewing platform's loungers was unforgettable. Surrounded by complete silence, with only the sound of wind brushing over the dunes. Occasional shooting stars would cross the night sky, each time eliciting small gasps of excitement. It felt like truly being on a Mars base, observing distant Earth.
The camp thoughtfully prepared astronomical guide activities. Professional astronomy guides would use laser pointers to show the locations of various constellations and share related mythological stories. Listening to these imaginative tales while gazing at the vast sky felt deeply healing.
Sunrise Surprise
The desert at 5 AM was quite chilly. Wrapped in thick blankets, we boarded the waiting jeep. The vehicle bumped along through the desert as the horizon began showing signs of dawn. Our driver was particularly experienced, taking us directly to a sand dune top with an excellent view.
Waiting for sunrise was filled with anticipation and excitement. Gradually, the eastern sky began brightening, displaying beautiful pink and orange hues. When the first ray of sunlight leaped over the horizon, the entire desert seemed to come alive, with previously dark dunes suddenly turning golden and shimmering.
Particularly magical was how the desert's colors changed continuously as the sun rose. It started as a gentle pink-gold, slowly transformed into bright orange-red, and finally showed its characteristic reddish-brown. The distant dome camp gleamed in the morning sun, its silver exterior reflecting sunlight just like a Mars base from science fiction.
At this time, we could also see some early-rising desert animals. Several desert larks were foraging in nearby bushes, their calls particularly crisp in the silent morning. Occasionally we could spot jumping desert kangaroo rats, looking especially lively in the morning light.
Helpful Tips
To experience this unique "Mars journey," advance planning is really important. Because the camp has limited rooms, all of high quality, they're often hard to book. It's recommended to start booking at least 3 months ahead, especially during the peak season from October to April, when rooms are particularly in demand.
Although the camp's facilities are very complete, it's essential to be well-prepared for the desert. Sun protection is crucial - bring sunscreen with SPF 50+ and reapply frequently. Sunglasses should preferably have polarized lenses for better protection against intense desert sunlight.
Desert temperature variations between day and night are dramatic, potentially exceeding 35°C during the day and dropping below 10°C at night. So bring enough warm clothing, preferably easily removable layers to adapt to temperature changes.
A camera is absolutely essential! Bring a wide-angle lens to capture the desert's grandeur; a telephoto lens is also useful for photographing distant wildlife and sunset/sunrise details. If you have a tripod, bring it for night sky photography.
In-Depth Experience
Two nights here completely changed my understanding of "unique accommodation." This isn't just a place to stay, but a wonderful journey through time and space. Opening your eyes each day to see not an ordinary ceiling but a transparent dome and endless desert sky is truly special.
The camp staff are all particularly friendly, mostly local Bedouins with deep affection for this land. During evening campfires, they perform traditional Bedouin music and dance for guests, sharing interesting stories about desert life.
The food is also a highlight. The camp's chefs use local ingredients and cooking methods, making each meal an adventure in flavor. Especially the traditional lamb cooked in sand, which emanates an unforgettable aroma.
Waking up in the morning, opening the tent door, you're greeted by endless red desert and fresh morning breeze. At night, lying in bed watching countless stars through the dome, you feel like a real Mars explorer. This experience is truly worth experiencing for everyone.
So, aren't you also curious to experience what it's like to be a "Mars resident"? Trust me, it will definitely be an unforgettable travel experience!
